Shareholder meetings are the American equivalent of May Day parades in Red Square

Time Warner is the General Electric of the media world. For shareholders of both it’s Groundhog Day everyday.

Icahn’s efforts buying Time Warner shares bring to mind Michael Douglas’ character Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street” saying at a shareholder meeting where he’s attempting a hostile takeover, “I’m a liberator of capital!”.

A big difference between the “Teldar” meeting where Gekko spoke and the ones I attend to make my pitch for saving the shareholers’ bacon is nowadays directors are nowhere to be seen. When they do bother to showup, they sit with their backs to the shareholders and don’t answer questions. Usually the CEO and the corporate secretary are the only participants.

American shareholder meetings are like showing up on May Day in Red Square to watch from a great distance a few top leaders a Kremlim balcony watching the parade pass.

How Does Warren Buffett Get Married? Frugally, It Turns Out

Last Saturday, Mr. Buffett and his daughter went to Borsheim’s Fine Jewelry in Omaha, which is owned by his conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway, to pick out a ring.

Did Mr. Buffett get the employee discount? “I’m sure he did,” Susie Buffett said…

A local judge performed the 15-minute ceremony [at his daughter’s house in Omaha]. Afterward, Mr. and Mrs. Buffett, ever thrifty, took them to dinner at Bonefish Grill, a casual seafood restaurant.

Today was one of the few times Deal Book didn't publish one of my comments.

The story yesterday about Buffett's remarriage reported his first wife left the family about 20 years ago to live in San Francisco. They never divorced. She died several years ago.

My guess is Buffett never got over losing his family in late middle age with teenage and early adult children to care for. The person left behind usually takes it very hard. No matter how much fame and fortune one has life is never the same again.

Posted a blog suggesting his very plain vanilla remarriage event reflected how deeply hurt he remains. Suspect the editors were too young to grasp my point.

Yesterday on his birthday Warren Buffett married his longtime companion.

NY Times Deal Book posting re the business section story today.

Mr. Buffett’s life to date stands for what I hope will be the standard for seniors. We desperately need older men and women well seasoned by experience to remain in public life to help guide our troubled society through very rocky shoals.

Read yesterday NBC is coming out with a fall comedy sitcom called “20 Good Years” in which two well educated older men decide to squander the last quarter of their lives playing the fool. Their excuse is their disappointments entitle them to forget a parent is a parent until their last breath.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Followed his investing strategy for 30+ years with marvelous success.

Los Angeles - The 2006 California Republican Party Convention took place at the Hyatt Regency on Avenue of the Stars last Saturday.

A surprising potential contender for the 2008 presidential election hosted his own booth at the convention - a man who has no prior political experience.

Dr. Mark Klein, who has yet to officially announce his candidacy, used this convention to continue to "test the waters" for the 2008 GOP nomination via his Presidential Exploratory Committee. Father of four, grandfather of two, he is also a physician, a psychiatrist, and a successful investor.

Standing over 6'3'', Dr. Klein explained his platform, smiling as he spoke. "This is the first time I have run for public office. I am most concerned about the deterioration of the family unit in America and the ability of our children and grandchildren to live in a middle class."

Klein asserts that the high cost of living over the past three decades has lead to increased tension within families, which, as a result, has been made manifest as a high divorce rate.
Lack of affordable housing is one of the key factors, Klein believes, creating the former societal woe. "As president, I would restrict mortgage lending standards. Non-conforming mortgages ("non-conforming" refers to a variance in the traditional standards for granting loans) pumps too much money into the economy." If people purchase what they can't afford, Klein contends that it will lead to bankruptcies, foreclosures, and emotional stress on families.

Illegal immigration is another issue that Dr. Klein addresses in his would-be policy. While welcoming and encouraging legal immigration, he states that illegal immigration lowers the wage structure and consumes the supply of affordable rent. According to Klein, this leaves American citizens with an increased cost of living, unlivable wages, and increased family tension.

In order to combat the latter social woe, if elected, Klein would order the Secretary of Health and Human Services to "attack the common incentives for divorce – money, revenge, and custody of the children" – by requiring states to receive federal family program subsidies to enact the Child Support Financial Responsibility Act (Act requiring child support recipients to document how money received from the former spouse directly benefits the child), and the Equal Physical Custody Act.

Dr. Klein has received encouraging results from Straw Polls recently. Polk County, Iowa's GOP Chairman Ted Sporer's Presidential Online Straw Poll dated August 7 indicated Dr. Klein receiving an overwhelming 52% (232 out of 443 votes cast) of the votes out of a total of 15 Republicans from which to choose.

Klein is hoping to garner the support of the 25 million "heartbroken parents" who don't have custody of their children, their parents, children of divorce, young adults unable to live independently, get married, or have children due to financial reasons, conservatives, and liberals for a stable family.

"I am everyone's grandfather and father. I am very practical. I am not ideological. If it doesn't work, I don't want to do it. I want everyone's children to have it better."

Why get bent out of shape over e-mail stock toots peddling garbage penny stocks?

Just watch CNBC with its relentless parade of flacks, gurus with histories of really terrible results and on air staff personnel whose principle attributes are attractive personalities, good looks and until the past couple of years many had great figures.

As the CNBC staff grows long in tooth I recommend hiring porn stars and dominatrixs who manage their money well so as to enjoy comfortable retirements. Appearing on air in costume they’d be a lot easier on the eyes and ears than Jim Cramer.

Why should GE care? With toothless securities laws, a spineless SEC, and an absentee landlord style board, Jeff Immelt and crew take real good care of themselves compensation wise while the shares have gone nowhere in six years!

Divorce Filing Puts New Claim on Kozlowski Riches

An article in USA Today on Thursday suggested that Ms. Kozlowski’s move will reverberate well beyond the divorce court. It could greatly complicate the government’s efforts to force Mr. Kozlowski to give up his ill-gotten gains. He has been ordered to pay $167 million in restitution and fines.

Ms. Kozlowski, who filed for divorce on July 31, is seeking half his assets and is attempting to put a lein on their estate in Boca Raton, Fla., which was purchased with a $30 million loan from Tyco.

Ms. Kozlowski’s divorce financial claims perfectly illustrate the absurdity of equitable distribution and community property laws. While not suggesting she be sent into desert with a bottle of water like Hagar, unimaginable wifely services peformed to perfection carry a monetary value more than an infinitesimal of the amounts claimed.
The logical flaw underlying these Daconian laws is marriage is a community. That’s a ridiculous notion in today’s world of a 50% divorce rate and according to Newsweek more than 40% of married men and women admit to adultery!
Beats me why men float along in political airy fairyland. They bet the emotional and financial ranch on marriage yet doesn’t occur to them to demand politicians protect their interest.
No wonder the political classes view men as Homer Simpsons easily controlled and manipulated by pornography, gambling, video games, and “guy things”.
In the meanwhile our sons’ opportunities vanish before our eyes.

Retracing my route to San Francisco 32 years later

On my way to Los Angeles to attend the state GOP convention starting Friday. Left early to take my time driving there on California 1 which runs along our magnificant coastline. When I came to California in 1974, took that route to San Francisco.

Big Sur is still the wild magnificant expanse I remember but very little is left of the rural California along Route 1 I remember in 1974. One tiny stretch remains in and around the town of Guadalupe between San Luis Obispo and Lompoc. Even there are signs of housing subdivisions about to spout.

Roadside motels along Route 1 are still cheap, comfortable and homey. Got a huge room for $59 last night in Santa Cruz. There are still places where bumping into a "Norman Bates" behind the counter remains. Holiday Inns don't ignite my imagination!

On the drive I realized how young and adventurous I was then to pull up stakes in New York and with $3000 in my pocket and no job lined up took off to start a new life in California. I bet the ranch and won. Drove up California just about dead broke to retrace my steps 32 years later as potential presidential candidate.

I'm one of those people who believes in the beauty of my dreams. Almost always gotten what I've gone after. Think I've got a real shot at the White House. Pulled together a volunteer organization of skilled, dedicated people who believe in me and my message. Spent almost nothing, and raised even less, to end up creaming the GOP's annointed potential presidential candidates by taking 52% of the vote in an Iowa straw poll. The party got so freaked out they pulled my name off the poll and reset the count

Apparently the party freaked out I got 52% of the vote pressured him to pull the plug. Sporer's explaination on www.therealsporer.blogspot.com:

Sex has become a drug on the market. Of course, this might be just a publicity stunt but there are clear signs sexual boredom is taking hold particularly with men. Viagra type drugs are being very aggressively peddled to young men, a population in which genuine erectile dysfunction (ED) is very rare.

A particularly amusing portrayal of male sexual boredom appeared in the brilliantly crafted comedy "Prime" starring Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman. Uma is the very definition of "hot". She plays a late 30ish woman who falls in love in a young man in his early 20s. Unbeknownst to Thurman and the boy, his mother played by Streep is her therapist.

In one of the many deliciously funny scenes the seductively dressed Uma can't tear the youngster away from a Nintendo game she bought him as birthday present.

My late father was right--too soon old too late smart! I grew up in an anti-masturbation culture where nonsense like doing it amongst other terrible consequences caused insanity! Wizzened by the sands of time think our elders knew sex wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Back then marriage and family were still valued so it was critical to scare boys away from masturbation and towards sex.

Masturbation has a lot going it. It's free, can't get VD, doesn't result in pregnancies, and afterwards you don't have to make nice to anyone.

McCain's 2% confirms the impression I got from meeting party activists in recent months he is very unpopular. He is viewed with such distrust a delegate in Texas, aware I was a psychiatrist, asked could McCain be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder to explain why he constantly shifts positions on important matters. Replied I couldn't opine because I hadn't examined him.

Mystery to me why he stays in the race. McCain doesn't have a ghost of a chance.

A realist I'll certainly respect whatever the posting standards are.

A political novice it took me awhile to realize there's an implicit understanding in mainstream politics of what might be termed approved issues. Not surprising the unapproved topics are the ones causing people the most problems--namely housing costs and family breakdown. To deal with both requires major changes in federal and state policy resulting in quite adverse financial consequences to powerful special interests, namely, the banks and the myiad of people making a living off divorce and its sequelae.

In other words we have no idea what he really stands other than opposition to the war.

The voters should know his views on federal policy’s impact on housing costs and family breakdown, why our lavishly funded federal health establishment can’t control the obesity epidemic, and why illegal internet gambling (the “crack cocaine” of gaming) is allowed operate.

No big deal being opposed to the Iraq War. Even theRepublicans know it’s a mess. In my travels haven’t run into a single rank and file Republican who defended it.

Divorce is everywhere but we never try for a quickie divorce from a failed war. We were lucky the North Vietnamese won outright. Otherwise we’d be still there trying to win “hearts and minds”.

Neither Lamont or Lieberman address our most critical national defense issue: How can democracies fight 21st century asymmetric wars which there are no “civilians” by relying upon 20th century international laws of war which assume there are?

The meaning of charity

Spoke to my pregnant daughter in Israel today. A very charitable person purchased hotel rooms in a relatively safe area in northern Israel so her family along with a number of others from Safed could get a few days of relief from the cramped life in the bomb shelters.

Enemies arise against us in every generation but our courage and iron resolve are the reasons the Jewish people have survived and prospered for more than 3500 years.

Israel today stands at the front line for the fight for the future of our civilization. If we do not show the "Hizbollahs" of this world we have the stomach to fight to win, all will be lost.

War notwithstanding the Jewish sense of humor persists. Yesterday, an Israeli radio station placed a call in English to a Burger King in Beirut to order "Nasrallahburgers" for takeout!

I believe the future of Western Civilization is on the line in this fight with Hizbollah.

New York Times Dealbook today: A bitter war of words emerged today in Nelson Peltz’s proxy contest for five board seats of H.J. Heinz Company. After Heinz accused Mr. Peltz’s firm, Trian, of purposely using a proxy soliciter that prevented “tens of thousands of retail shareholders” from being able to vote via Internet or telephone, Trian hit back with this statment:

“Heinz is well aware, and has known for some time, that the unaffiliated impartial third-party vote processing system does not support Internet and telephone voting of shares held through brokers and other intermediaries when shareholders are seeking to elect only a minority slate of directors in accordance with applicable law. It is not a matter of ‘cooperation’ as Heinz falsely states. The fact that Heinz would try to blame the Trian Group for a third party’s internal processing matter is simply absurd and a desperate act by Heinz to mislead shareholders.”

My posted comment:

As a Heinz shareholder, I am utterly outraged and disgusted by the company’s behavior in the proxy fight.

I got about 6% of the shareholder vote in 2005 for a proposal to sell the company. Since institutions usually vote for management, I got a high percentage of the small shareholder voter universe. Hence I’m not surprised small shareholders using street names frozen out of the ballot.

America gets all bent out shape about voting irregularities overseas but turns a blind eye to abuses here. At the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in Memphis in March, the GOP refused to list my name on the straw poll ballot despite attending with largest unpaid volunteer delegation from America’s 25 million non-custodial parent movement.

Coming in 9th of 16 as a write-in among among non-Tennesee delegates, my results were listed as “Other”. “Dr Other” beat Pataki, Guiliani, Brownback, Hagel, Gingrich, Barbour and Tancredo! McCain and Rice beat me by about 20-25 votes.

The Politburo is alive and doing very well!!!

Reconfiguring the electorate

The Leadership Institute teaches top notch campaign management skills for today's evenly divided electorate which leaves the real decision making to the undecided voters. Absent strong political beliefs they are the reason we have government driven by short term polls and winning the weekly newscycle.

My exploratory efforts to seek the White House will change all that. I'm trying to fundamentally alter the electorate by offering a fundamental reappraisal of how things should be done. Frozen out of media coverage, and shunned by the GOP, I have to be nimble and imaginative in getting out my message.

Just as the telegraph revolutionized the politics of 19th century so too the net. Getting my ideas out through blogs which reach the opinionmakers directly. In the below New York Times Dealbook comment I get to lay out a Klein Administration's approach to credit policy.

J.P. Morgan Chase early Wednesday posted record earnings of $3.5 billion, or 99 cents per share, for the second quarter.

My comment:

As a shareholder in all the major money center banks, I believe they are so inherently profitable over the short and long haul, I feel they have no excuse not to absorb very mild and transient earnings’ softness by acting in the best interests of the community.

There is no excuse for the banks to issue non conforming mortgages in this highly inflated housing market. Such mortgages pump too much money in the system to drive up prices and encourage speculation.

What amazes me is the managements are family people. Don’t they ask themelves about the impact of unreasonable housing prices on their children’s and grandchildren’s ability to own homes and start families?

We are led by the Baby Boomers and their progency for whom common sense, self restraint and delay of gratification are alien concepts.

A trip down memory lane

Staying in the dorms at the Leadership Institute program transports me back in time almost 50 years to my army days. Living with the youngsters is such a treat. The most obvious difference is they sleep late while like most older people I just can't!

Most delicious is I got the private room in the men's dorm. reserved for the "chaperone". In the army the squad leader got it. Upon arrival I set up my stuff on a regular bunk but one of my folks found out the room was available. Turned out another student not knowing of me found it before I did but decided not to take it because he thought it should go to a future president of the United States!

For 4-5 more days I'll be 18 again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt Sen. Clinton’s bag ladies and gentlemen told her to keep quiet about Israel’s life and death fight with Hamas and Hizbollah so as not to antagonize the Arab-American campaign donation honey pot.

While her lips were zipped my pregnant daughter and her family were in a bomb shelter in Safed undergoing rocket attacks. Several fell on her street.

The American Jewish community should be very wary of Hillary Clinton. When it suited her purpose, she cozied up to the Arafats, and turned her back on Israel.

One of the reasons I became a Republican in late 1960s was the Democrats were no where to be seen when Israel was in grave jeopardy. I remember the 6 Day War as if it was yeserday. The Johnson administration openly abandoned Israel in her hour of desperate need.

The other reason I switched was the Democrats ditched the middle class to play hardball racial politics. Cost me dearly. In the mid-60s was in med school at Downstate and my wife taught school in Brownsville. While Democratic limosine liberals lionized the new Cossacks, militant black power types, we had to move to Queens to escape the alarming escalation of crime in the neighborhood around Downstate while at the same time idealistic, dedicated Jewish school teachers like my wife were forced out.

Wouldn’t be trying for White House were I not pretty steamed up about today’s GOP. I’m sticking with the GOP because they’re good people who just need to retool the message and get new leadership. Unlike the Democrats, the GOP’s friendship for Israel, and affection for the Jewish people, are the real deal.

Mrs. Clinton is untrustworthy when it comes to the security of Israel. If the American Jewish community ever got in jeopardy, I doubt she’d be there for us.

Notwithstanding the urgent need to reform federal policy destroying families, and particularly fathers and children, I was practicing online political psychotherapy to motivate financially and emotionally crushed non custodial parents, mostly fathers, to fight back. They are today’s prewar “German Jews” victimized by Nuremberg style laws.

I urged all of them to run for office no matter where or type. Much like the Yishuv representatives of pre-independence Israel scouring Europe to bring “home” broken Jewish concentration camp survivors, my goal was to restore them as effective parents again.

The divorce epidemic is largely the reason for poor educational achievement, drug abuse, the collapse of conventional sexual identity, conduct disorders, the obesity driven diabetes epidemic, the vanishing middle class and an increasing bizarre cultural zeitgeist.

Unless Bloomberg plans to run as a Democrat, wrapping himself in the JFK legend won’t play well with the Republican base. As Democrat he’d be a far more effective and attractive candidate than Hillary Clinton. There’s a world of difference between great success in business and hands on government leadership than simply policy wonketting.

I agree with David Gottfried’s comment above. What he alludes to is why the GOP base is up in arms and I’m testing the waters for the nomination. We want the administration to walk the walk on effective family policy which means among things ending federal policy which perversely promotes divorce and family discord.

Federal family policy destroys families by promoting the main reasons couples split up–money, revenge and getting the children.

Like gambling, liquor and tobacco taxes the massive subsidies states receive to collect child support incentive divorce. Subsidies are linked to the amount collected so levels are set very high. The “deadbeat dad” canard is most the result of people mostly simply unable to pay. Federal dollars also underwrite the cost of jailing these folks. The system operates much like the old welfare system which destroyed the black family.

The draconian Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is a perfect to extract revenge. Without fear of legal retribution baseless complaints result in a spouse being automatically jailed without an evidentiary hearing, create an unfair advantage for the complainant in the divorce courts, and provide a mechanism to automatically seize the family home.

A Klein Administration could slash the divorce rate overnight by tying federal subsidies for family programs to a rebuttal presumption of joint physical custody in a divorce action, and requiring recipients of child support to file periodic reports supported by documentation showing how the money was used for the direct benefit of the child.

Finally it would be a civil rights felony to file a knowingly false complaint of spousal or child abuse resulting in someone getting jailed without a full due process trial.

I could easily win the White House with the votes of the 25 million non custodial parents (mostly men), their heartbroken parents, the children of divorce, and middle class folks for whom enjoying stable family life trumps ideology.

What federal policies promote divorce? Your kidding right?Start with the $.66 federal incentive for every dollar of child support collected. The more divorces with children that occur the more child support ordered. AND if a state gives mom sole custody (which she gets simply by asking or claiming abuse) then dad will, in the vast majority of cases, pay huge child support awards resulting in more federal incentives.Yes it’s true. Our Federal government is incentivising the states to have more divorces, sole custody awards (instead of equal parenting where dad can actually be a parent) and high child support awards in return for billions of Federal dollars.

Bloomberg, Giulaini and Hillary have one thing in common they will never talk about this “family” issue in their Morning Buzz. The issue of the federal policy that promotes divorce: Social Security Title 42 US Code Part 4d; Subsection 666-This law deals with the federal incentives for the collection of child support. This is the engine that drives the train of the divorce industry. Judges almost always vote against dads for custody because they know this simple concept: The more non-custodial dads, the more child support generated, the more federal kickbacks for the counties who collect it. This is why we work tireless to support Dr. Klein’s presidential exploratory committee. I hear wonderful speeches from others concerning the rights for terrorists and foreigners. What about the constitutional rights of the 25 million American dads; 90% of the dads never even get a trial! Republicans at the federal level are in serious trouble with their core conservative constituency. They listened on Harriet Miers, after a huge backlash. But they have completely failed to pay any attention to the very large numbers of pro-marriage, anti-divorce, anti-entitled-welfare state Americans. In fact, Republicans have gone out of their way to ignore it.
Over half of Americans have been seriously impacted by the entitled welfare state, and they are not happy. This spans both liberals and conservatives. I estimate that about 40% of the Republican vote would immediately come from a well-done social reform pro-family platform. This is the only thing that can motivate both the conservative base and bring home the mainstream vote.

The Federal government spends more money destroying families, then studying the wreckage and attempting to mask the results, than it spends on anything else. This must end: we do things to citizens that even the Chinese find disgusting.

Dr. Mark Klein did extremely well at the SRLC, and every other convention he has attended, because he speaks to these issues with positive solutions. States know what is going on. They want change. Republicans who are trying very hard to ignore both Klein and these issues are sealing the fate of the party in 2008.

The rights of men are often denigrated, and the political discourse is for the most part wholly oblvious to this.

For example, although Farahakan is, to my mind at least, an odious figure, he hit a nerve with his idea for a million man march. This is because the problems of black men have been so thoroughly overlooked. And I hate to say it, but much of this is because so many of my fellow liberals, enthrall to feminism, could only see the plight of black women and forgot about black men.

But enough of the abstract and let’s get to the concrete: At one of my old employers, it was established that black women could be hired but that black men would never be hired. This is because black men were considered a greater criminal risk.

Of course, I am sure many conservatives think this is impossible, that this cannot happen, because of statutes prohibiting such discrimination. They fail to realize that it isn’t easy to bring such a discrimination suit, that a man trying to find a job usually doesn’t have the money to hire attorneys to bring suit, and that counsel might shun such a suit. Do you really think that in the course of pretrial discovery one will find a memo that says “Don’t hire black men.”

There are various governmental entities that are supposed to combat discrimination, but don’t get me started on the impotence, lethargy and inconsequence of such bogus remedial programs that create the illusion of liberal intervention and don’t do a damn thing.

I am a small business owner who lives near Pittsburgh, PA. When I met Dr Klein in Aug 2005 and listened to his empathy for the middle class citizens and the non custodial parents I was shocked. There is NO one who is talking about families today.

I am appalled with our federal policy which is designed not only to break up families, but to “force” them to be dependent upon them. Children of divorced parents today have the federal government as their father.

It is totally baffling to me that Americans just sit by and let the government spend their hard earned dollars (billions) to CREATE situations in which we have to raise taxes to try and fix.
Since August of 2005 I have traveled with Dr Klein to DC (several times), MN, San Antonio (TX GOP), IA, Memphis (TN GOP), OH, PA. During our travels I have not had any negativity about Dr Klein. His word is very well received. We are tired of brass buttoned politicians who are ‘career oriented.’ We want someone who has morals and values. All one needs to do is talk with Dr Klein for a couple minutes to see his authenticity. I believe Dr Klein has appeared at the right place/right time. He is the political leader for us 25 million Non Custodial Parents and our families/friends.

In court papers, she said he had repeatedly vowed in ominous tones that he would die in that house and that she would never get it...Now there is no house.

The divorce situation is so out of hand the result of federal policy incentivizing family breakdown one of these days an unwilling victim with sufficient scientific and/or military training will take revenge by destroying an American city with a WMD.

We've already experienced public revenge terrorism for divorce. Last year's Los Angeles train derailment which killed about 10 people and causes millions in property was committed by a distraught young man deprived of his children, and financially ruined in a divorce action.

To reduce the divorce rate best approach is to remove the incentives--MONEY, REVENGE AND GETTING THE CHILDREN!

A Klein Administration would set as conditions for states to receive federal family programs the enactment of:

Rebuttable presumption of joint physical custody in a divorce action.

Recipients of child support shall file periodic reports supported by documentation showing how the money was used for the direct benefit of the child .

Order the Attorney General to prosecute as a Civil Rights felony knowingly filing false charges of domestic violence or child abuse resulting in someone's incarceration without a full due process trial.

NY Times today--Aga Mehmet Arslan, a Kurdish village chieftain in Turkey, in front of one of his five houses in Isiklar, Turkey, one house for each of his five wives. If he had to do it over, he said, he would marry only one woman.

With his 5 wives, 55 children and 80 grandchildren, 400 sheep, 1,200 acres of land and a small army of servants, Aga Mehmet Arslan would seem an unlikely defender of monogamy.

Yet if he were young again, said Mr. Arslan, a sprightly, potbellied, 64-year-old Kurdish village chieftain, he would happily trade in his five wives for one...(and) "I wouldn't do it again" listing the challenges of having so many kin — like the need to build each wife a house away from the others to prevent friction and his struggle to remember all of his children's names...

"I have done nothing shameful," he said. "I don't drink. I treat everyone with respect. But having so many wives can create problems."

A stitch in time saves nine

I weigh myself daily on a doctor's balance scale. Noticed I put on a couple of pounds despite eating no more than the requisite number of calories to maintain my normal weight for someone 6-4 of 200-204 pounds. (15 cal/lb x 200=3000) A serious chocolate lover discovered I undercounted the calorie count for my current favorite goody by 0.55 calories/piece. Didn't take long to accumulate an extra 7000 cal which converts to 2 pounds of body fat. Was probably eating 3100 calories daily. With a very minor decrease in daily chocolate intake the problem should resolve quickly.

It's this kind of personal responsibility approach I'll bring to my medical programs when in the White House.

We’re rapidly heading into a world controlled by the Manchurian Globals. For them personal thift is their major concern. When the market soared as it did last week with good consumer confidence numbers, meant people took on more debt. This is not the Road to Serfdom Robert Hayek had in mind!

Very hard to follow a buy and hold strategy in today's impulse ridden, instant gratification oriented society.

Very telling one of our key economic indicators is consumer confidence. Very different than when I grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. Thift was highly valued then. In elementary school arithmetic class once a week we'd deposit at least a dime in a real saving account set up gratis by a local bank. The program's motto "Save your dimes and watch your dollars grow" still renonates with me.

Even brokerage firms encouraged good investing habits. When a private stationed in Germany making about $120 per month in late 1950s and early 1960s, I joined a Merrill Lynch plan for soldiers in which I purchased shares almost commission free and reinvested the dividends. Invested about $35 each month so that several months later the money had grown so substantially it financed a long leave to Paris and London.

I'm that ever so rare investor today who still follows a very long term buy and hold strategy. I also keep paper stock certificates rather than hold them in "street name". Always get a little thrill handling old Standard Oil of California stock certificates on those very rare times I need to visit the safe deposit box.

For very long term investors like myself holding top quality dividend paying securities the cash returns are extrordinary. Dividend growth alone for some of my shares returns 25% annually against the original price paid long ago.

That why if I made the White House there'll be a new set of economic indicators featuring saving and investment over consumption.

Moreover, in a Klein Administration America will never again pay retail for anything. I grew up in a world in which the bywords were "I can get it for you wholesale!"

Oracle Chief Withdraws a Donation to Harvard

Lawrence J. Ellison, chief executive of the Oracle Corporation and one of the world’s wealthiest people, has decided not to donate $115 million to Harvard as he announced he would last year.

Harvard had planned to use the donation, which would have been the largest single philanthropic donation the university had ever received, to establish the Ellison Institute for World Health. Mr. Ellison decided to cancel his plans for the donation after the resignation in February of Lawrence H. Summers, the president of Harvard, amid a storm of controversy.

I grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. I find today’s political correctness culture utterly intellectually oppressive as compared to the wide open, vibrant anything goes public intellectual debate of those years.

For example, off the discussion agenda is a very significant factor in my medical opinion (and also from my experience raising 4 children) today’s disasterous obesity driven diabetes epidemic is unsupervised latchkey children stuff themselves with junk food.

Raise that and folks would have to revisit the social and economic value of feminist careerism! Then the next logical question is do most women actually work for nothing because it takes two incomes today to almost duplicate one as recently as 30 years ago?

Condi Rice's "talk therapy" approach to bad apples like Iran, North Korea and Hamas is a total bust. Everybody from here to Timbuktu knows what passes for a foreign policy is winning the domestic news cycle to look good in the polls.

International law shouldn't be an excuse for national suicide. Better believe if I make the White House EVERY international law agreement we currently follow will be evaluated to relevance and effectively in the real world of 21st century asymmetric war.

Moreover, I will not let an American city be destroyed by a WMD because all we can do is Mirandize terror suspects. We should to empower the special federal courts dealing with national security matters to issue intensive interrogation warrants when we appear to be holding someone we believe in good faith knows of an impending attack.

Single-family homes sit side by side, their lawns weed-whacked into submission to the same suburban dream that Mr. Nicolosi's Italian-American parents embraced 40 years ago when they moved to this working-class community on Long Island.

But when a school bus stops at the white Cape Cod opposite his house, two children seem to pop up from beneath the earth. Emerging from an illegal basement apartment that successive homeowners have rented to a Mexican family of illegal immigrants, they head off to another day of public schooling at taxpayer expense.

This is a neighborhood in the twilight zone of illegal immigration, and wherever Mr. Nicolosi looks, the hidden costs of cheap labor hit home....

Such an article would have never appeared in the NY Times had I not been hammering that issue home to the administration and the GOP in my Washington Times adverts and face to face at party meetings.

Got a report yesterday from my DC operative he's gotten warm receptions at senate offices over our family policy issues every since we got in the party's face about them at the Texas and Iowa GOP conventions in June.

Think the strategy to get rid of Dr. Klein and his Sam's Club Republicans is to give us what we want before the primary season begins. They know I've got a real organization on the ground in Iowa already. Given the grass roots nature of the Iowa caucuses, and positive personal response I got from delegates in Des Moines, I could upset the political applecart in 2008.

More than anything the powers-that-be know Dr. Klein is for REAL.

Very imaginative film with excellent production values. The audience really liked it.

The generally poor reviews reflect the inability to consciously handle the film's underlying message--for men middle class family life today is an unhappy, unrewarding experience.

Sandler plays a decent, well motivated architect with a young family and a non working wife trying desperately to make ends meet. Kate Beckensale, as his wife while pleasant and attractive, is very self centered. His kids are disrespectful.

The movie's sendup on marital sex and marriage counseling are hysterical.

Typical of today's cultural zeitgeist Sandler takes the rap for everything that goes wrong.

Marriage for men today is little more than a hostage taking.

Keeping Divorced Dads at a Distance

EVERY other weekend for the past four and a half years, I've spent three precious days with my two adolescent daughters. We play tennis in summer, ski in winter, travel when the school schedule allows. But no matter where we are, we're all keenly aware of the thin membrane of secrecy that keeps us from being as close as we were before their mom and I divorced.

Like most divorced fathers, I'm caught in exactly the kind of nightmarish situation that experts on stress say to avoid — a great deal of responsibility, but very little power. I'm the major source of support for my children; my financial obligations are set by the state, and my wages automatically garnished. (If I lost my job tomorrow, and couldn't keep up with my payments, a warrant for my arrest would be issued within two months.) But my influence over how my daughters are being raised is limited, sometimes by decisions their mother makes that I have no input into, and sometimes by their allegiance to her when she and I are at odds..."

Retail politics Iowa style is fun but time consuming. After the convention Saturday, met with local activists and was the honored guest at Sunday services at an important local church. Got a warm welcome. Later on Sunday drove to Cedar Rapids via secondary roads to get a sense of the real Iowa. Today instead of driving straight from Des Moines to Omaha to get my flight home drove to northern Iowa. Stopped a local newspaper near the Minnesota line. Had a very interesting chat with the publisher of this small circulation paper (1500) serving 4 nearby towns.

Very hospitable and clearly interested in my message gave me some important information which will significantly enhance my ability to effectively campaign in Iowa. Things will really get rolling after the November elections. Got additional good advice from some folks at Iowa State University at Ames today.

Also met today with the Iowa GOP staff chief to learn the nuts and bolts of actually entering the 2008 caucus race. Really very grassroots so anyone can give it a shot. Think my prospects are excellent.

Doors are starting to open up to me.

A very long day. Spending the night in Souix Falls, SD before driving tomorrow to Omaha to catch my flight. My stamina, energy and enthusiasm are amazing for a man my age.

At the Iowa GOP meeting today met a retired pastor in his mid-70s who opted out of Social Security. Instead of paying into the system he invested the money in mutual funds which generated a higher income in retirement.

Unfortunately, I neglected to ask him about his medical insurance coverage. I think his enhanced income over Social Security could be replicated by a young worker following his investment system. The problem would be access to affordable medical insurance with range of benefits Medicare offers.

Still possible in remote rural areas of Iowa to live the American middle class dream. Spoke with a very attractive 27 year old mother of two. She and her husband recently purchased a spacious family home on a large lot for $35,000. Very financially secure on her husband's modest income they are assiduous savers.

For most Iowans life's a lot tougher. Housing costs are very high in a low wage economy. $150-200K homes are common in built up areas. Many Iowa college students I met at the meeting were concerned about their economic prospects particularly because they're starting out with huge education debts.

The Iowa maufacturing economy is in trouble. Plant closing and company moveaways are common. Maytag's moving out after being taken over, and Rubbermaid is downsizing.

Iowa journal--Flew to Omaha because air service from Oakland is very long and circuitous to Des Moines. Driving the 130 miles to Des Moines. Writing from a McDonald's in a rural area off the freeway about 60 miles out. About 9 PM here. Amazed, and delighted, to see most of the youngsters dining here are slender and quite cheerful. My guess is the secret sauce to their good health and spirits are intact families. This is a family farming area where people need to full together to get the work done.

Low cost solutions to the obesity driven diabetes epidemic

Because the onset of adult diabetes is silent people usually learn they have it when it's too late to reverse the disease. The key to prevention is to catch impaired glucose metabolism early.

I think all overweight adults should test their blood sugar every morning before eating. Very inexpensive to do. Meters like the Freestyle above cost about $60. Test strips are about $1 each and the needle about a dime apiece. The test is completely painless because the drop of blood required is taken in the forearm.

People who do this will quickly notice blood sugar often reflects the caloric intake from the day before. The information becomes self enforcing. Motivated people will start adjusting their diets to get better results. In time diabetes rates will significantly decline.

The cost savings are so potentially massive private insurers would likely cover testing supplies.

I know this works because that's how I avoided getting adult onset diabetes.

About 18 months ago my blood sugar was slightly elevated but not yet at diabetic levels. Carry the gene for Type II. Assiduously followed my doctor's advice by losing weight, excercising and changing my dietary habits.

Also tested my blood sugar every morning. Really helped keep me track. Still do it daily as safeguard. Better to be safe than sorry. Over the past year since my weight returned to normal, average weekly blood sugars which are well within normal limits are declining.

HBS tuition and living expenses have more than doubled over the past decade while the buying power of graduates' starting salaries have more than halved when denominated in housing price dollars. In practical terms a $100,000 salary before taxes in New York City, Boston, LA and the San Francisco would leave barely enough to rent a so-so 1 bedroom apartment.

This is why I'm skeptical high SAT and GRE scores measure anything about the capacity for critical thinking. I suspect they measure quite the reverse. High scorers are mostly those with finely honed skills to learn and identify with the received wisdom of the day.

Such folks end up staffing the grim dictatorship of the prevailing orthodoxy then get seriously bent out of shape by people like me.

The government standfastly maintained during the housing price bubble inflation rates were low. Anyone with functioning brain knew otherwise, and if financially capable, acted appropriately.

CPI numbers were artifically low because instead of using the cost of housing in the index imputed rents were substituted. Rents are less flexible over the short term for a variety of reasons such as leases and maintaining cordial relations with tenants.

I noticed that in my everyday life. Until recently sold, the house next to mine in Oakland commanded a low rent in relation to the sale price. There's a rent ceiling to what people can or will pay regardless of the value of the home.

There are a number of political and economic advantages to fiddle with the CPI. For example, it keeps the folks calm and reduces mandated upward inflation adjustments to entitlements like Social Security.

With the property market leveling off, and rents on the rise as more and more people can't afford to buy, the government will shift to calculating the CPI based on housing prices!

With Americans doped up on sex, entertainments up the wazzoo, and working themselves to death they won't notice anything.

I'm opposed to gay marriage as well.

The underlying problem is the very rapid societial collapse in normal sexual identity the result of an out of control divorce rate and low marriage formations. Both are in part related to the deterioration in the ability of young couples to live an afordable middle class life style. There are a number of factors involved but the most important are (1) federal family policy promoting divorce and family discord (2) non conforming mortgages promoting the housing bubble and (3) illegal aliens destroying the blue collar wage structure and consuming the affordable rental stock.

Marriage for men is particularly problematic. Nowadays it's little more than a hostage taking given the risk of divorce accompanied by the loss of day to day contact with the children, crushing child support, community property, and the risk of being jailed without due process protections from false domestic violence allegations. Women often such allegations to get control of the family home and leverage in the divorce courts.

Children need both parents in the home to sort out the very complex psychodynamic developmental issues underlying the formation of a normal sexual identity.
The social conservative movement is on its last legs simply because of it's comprised of mostly later middle aged people and seniors. That's why the GOP and Bush administration doesn't take the movement seriously. 2008 will be last time conservatives will have any political relevance. Don't waste this last chance by getting bogged down in theory and rhetoric. Time is simply not on the conservatives' side.

That's why I'm trying for the White House late in life. Doing it solely for my children's and grandchildren's generations. Unless there's a grownup in the White House in 2008, you can kiss the traditional American family goodbye.

Attended the Texas GOP convention in San Antonio last week where I spoke with dozens of young and middle aged activists. They are very unhappy with the GOP. Without exception got a positive reponse to my plans to restore affordable middle class family life and reform federal family policy. They will VOTE for someone with a concrete plan to give them a realistic chance for a stable middle class family life. My guess is absent such a candidate they'll stay home on election day in 2008.

Anticipate I'll hear the same thing at the Iowa GOP meeting next week in Des Moines.

Getting ready for the Iowa GOP state convention next week in Des Moines. Double checked my printing order with the Virginia firm doing my work to discover they left out the lapel stickers. They were a big hit in San Antonio. Great advertising having hundreds of folks wearing them as they circulated at the convention.

Cash is king. I pay my bills on time so he did the stickers immediately and will overnight them tomorrow. Ready cash gets things done quickly and usually very inexpensively.

1- The party is run by big business interests who've bought the silence of the conservative leadership with truckloads of faith based money.

3- They invariably smile and nod approvingly when I say there'll be grownup in the White House if I'm elected.

I am cautiously optimistic Henry Paulson is the right person for the Treasury at this time. Very hard to conceive a man of his age, sterling success and personal interests would see the job as anything but a personal sacrifice made in later in life to serve our beloved country in her hour of greatest need.

A member of my generation, when we’re gone, there will be no one left with a living memory of an America in which common sense and reasonable self restraint still had social currency.

In the Seder the reader explains the Exodus to the child who does not know what to ask. Hopefully Paulson will explain as he resets Treasury policy to the Boomers and their decendants financial profligacy will destroy America.

America today reminds me of the matriarch in the The Cherry Orchard who squandered the family fortune by gambling.

Hopefully he's a lot like me in the sense seeking high office in later life is a personal sacrifice made not for the power and the glory but simply to help our country in its hour of need.

Paulson’s primary agenda should be to rein in today’s irresponsible lending practices which underlies the housing bubble and encourages ordinary Americans to assume excessive debt. In another article in today’s New York Times on identity theft the reporter noted the banks' marketing departments are running the show.

Nowadays most blue and pink collar workers along much of the middle class are enslaved to the contemporary version of the “company store”–the credit card issuers & mortgage lenders.

Cheering a sharp market drop isn’t usually my thing. But today might be different. Paulson’s appointment hopefully signaled The Street he won’t be the money center banks’ sock puppet as Snow was.

Agree with Mr. Romulus’ comment above about protecting the value of dollar. Here’s how depreciated the dollar is. The price of gas today denominated in housing cost dollars from 1955 to the present is cheaper than when as a teenager in the 1950s paid 30 cents a gallon!

It can, with an adaptor, be used inside the Exhibit hall. It requires a 110/12 volt adapter. I was planning on picking one up.

If you were willing to pay my gas receipts to get there, I woud be very happy to come and help out in San Antonio and Des Moines, just the gas that is needed to take me off my route to get there. I will have my daughter for nearly two months once I pick her up in Georgia or I would beable to come without any help on the gas.

I appologize for having to ask, but the memphis trip really set me back, I fully support you, I just can not afford to travel so far off my planned route without some help on the gas. I will understand if you choose not to help

My nationwide campaign team will descend on San Antonio Thursday for the Texas state GOP convention. We have double booth space right at the entrance to the exhibit hall. In addition to pressing the Texas political flesh will be meeting with Fathers Rights activists in Austin following the convention to plan for the 2008 presidential primaries. Move over, Kinky Friedman, Dr. Klein is coming!

In mid-June we'll be in Des Moines for the Iowa GOP meeting. Again, will meet with activists to put in place an organization to prepare for the 2008 caucus. Iowa's a perfect place to pull an upset. The caucuses are totally grassroots. Perfect place to mobilize the fathers rights movement which has a presence just about everywhere.

Staying healthy as a senior

Maintaining good health is mostly the result of taking advantage of all that modern medicine and dentistry have to offer. Will get the shingles vaccine as soon as my doctor gets it. The cost should be covered by my Medicare Part B supplement. Even if it wasn't, not spend a $100-150 to prevent an extremely painful, chronic debilitating disease which spoils the quality of life?

Top flight restorative dentistry isn't expensive when compared to the luxuries people have come to expect. For the cost of a weekend in Las Vegas recently got bone grafts to save a molar and an incisor. Both grafts took raising the odds to close to 100% I'll be eating steak until I croak.

Good habits also make a big difference. Don't gamble, rarely drink and never take illegal drugs. Very careful to maintain a normal weight and because of a family history of adult onset diabetes check my blood sugar daily. My sugars are normal but the onset of diabetes is silent. There's a lot that can be done to prevent the onset of adult onset diabetes if deterioration in glucose metabolism is caught early. Most importantly I take prescribed medicines as directed and get regular checkups.

Taking personal responsibility is the key to success in most things in life.

If in the White House, I'll set a good personal example about health maintenance which should inspire many to follow to follow my lead. Were that to happen we could achieve enormous cost savings at no cost to taxpayers.

Suspect the House GOP is gaming conservatives on the immigration bill

Really no need to negotiate with the senate to create a final bill which would require House Republicans to concede on amnesty to get the upper chamber on board. House Republicans could just met the bill automatically die when the current Congress ends.

My guess is house Republicans will milk the amnesty issue for all its worth for publicity and campaign donations to hold on to their seats. Once reelected, they'll quickly fold to senate demands.

About 2 million illegals qualified for the 1986 amnesty versus 12 million today should the senate's version of the immigration bill pass. Foreigners will assume eventually illegals always eventually get amnesty. Hence in the 2026 bill likely more than 50 million will qualify. That would be end of the United States as know it.

Totally swamped the GOP's annointed potential candidates with more than a million votes. Accusations of "spamming" are flying. We've done nothing wrong.

Survey Monkey which conducted the poll notified me in writing they made no allegation of wrongdoing by anyone in connection with the poll.

We tried to reach non custodial parents across America about the vote. Not that hard to do because there are active groups with websites and/or message boards in practically every city, town, village and hamlet. Probably no group is more pissed off and determined to get heard politically than non custodial parents.

How we define things often sets the parameters of the discussion. The GOP is dead in the water because nowadays people assume someone is either a "business Republican" or a Conservative. That's leaves out the mass of ordinary, but not particularly ideological, middle class Republicans whose primary concerns center on making a living, raising the kids, and keeping the family together.

I suspect there are lots of Democrats who define themselves the same way.
