Planet Earth calling the U.S. Senate: Anybody home?

The senate passed in defiance of a threatened veto a bill to ban use of "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" against anyone, including illegal combatants, in United States government custody. It would also require all American troops to use only interrogation techniques authorized in a new Army field manual to apply strict adherence to international law standards to battlefied detainees.

Among other things this means troops under fire can't apply common sense interrogation technqiues to coerce a prisoner to reveal information which might save their lives, or complete the mission.

The enemy doesn't play by Marquis of Queensbury rules. Such disregard for plain vanilla realities suggests what this country really needs is a national shrink.

Sometimes nations, like people, gotta do what they have to do to survive.
